Choosing the right cichlid food

There are so many cichlids in the aquarium hobby today. This means that there is obviously a wide range of feeding habits for cichlids – a fact that can make choosing the correct cichlid food a little tricky at times. Cichlids are either primarily carnivorous or herbivorous, but many people agree that each carnivorous cichlids will likely benefit from some plant or algae based food supplements and vice versa.

If you want to get really technical, a quick search on the internet is recommended to find out if your cichlid species have any special food requirements. This will allow you to choose a plant based or carnivorous cichlid food. Many aquarists will, instead, choose to go with a well-balanced staple cichlid food and then to add varied foods once in awhile to ensure all the essential vitamins, proteins, and minerals are supplied to their fish.
