Some fish tanks chronically suffer from issues that can be solved with the use of a UV sterilizer.  Aquarium inhabitants may suffer from bacterial or parasite infections, or the aquarium might suddenly be overcome with thick mats of green algae.  These issues can be frustrating to deal with if they recur often.  Sometimes the best thing to do is try using a UV sterilizer to finally keep these pathogens at bay.

Prevention of infections and algae outbreaks is the best thing that can be done for these problems.  Prevention is best achieved by keeping to a regular aquarium maintenance schedule.  Water should be changed every one to two weeks to remove nitrates and other potentially toxic substances.  Filter media should be rinsed once per month or more frequently if the aquarium filter starts slowing down or not working properly.  Filter cartridges should be changed according to manufacturer directions.  Finally, to prevent bacterial or parasitic infections from tearing through an aquarium, new fish should be quarantined before being added to the fish tank.

If algae or pathogens overcome even these preventative strategies, then fish will become infected and algae can coat the plants, decorations, and aquarium glass.  They can sometimes take over quickly because they develop slowly, unseen to the naked eye until they gain an advantage and become a full blown infection our algae outbreak.  This can be helped with the use of a UV sterilizer.

Aquarium fish still need to be medicated appropriately when using a UV sterilizer, but the sterilizer will help kill off any free bacteria and microscopic algae cells.  Water is passed through the sterilizer which uses strong UV lights to bathe anything in the water in in its rays.  The UV light is harmful to single- and multicellular life.  The DNA or RNA is damaged which usually becomes fatal to these unwanted pests.
